Notec Forest
The promotional forest complex covers around 1,370 square kilometres in the Gorzów Basin between the Warta and the Noteć, from Santok and Skwierzyna to the west, to Oborniki and Rogoźno to the east. One of the most characteristic features of this region are the dunes which form a veritable labyrinth of valleys and hills. The dunes are 20-30 m high on average, but the highest one, called Great Owl (Polish: Wielka Sowa) is 42 m high. The afforestation of the region began in the second half of the 19th century, but the invasion of the butterfly called pine beauty in the 1920s devastated the forest. Fortunately, it was reconstructed with new plantings. Today, the Notec Forest is dominated by pines aged around 70. The oldest tree in the forest is an oak named Józef which grows in Marianowo near Sieraków.
