Świebodzin town fortifications

The fortifications around Świebodzin had been built and expanded since the 14th Century. The defensive wall with 12 castle towers and 3 gates, and a wide moat, protected the town from outside attacks. The gradual dismantlement of the fortifications started in mid-18th Century, when defensive walls were no longer necessary from a military perspective. The materials recovered from the demolition of the defensive walls was used in the construction of new buildings. The surviving elements of the old fortifications include 3 castle towers and sections of the walls and moat. To find the best preserved sections of the fortifications, head to Parkowa, Okrężna and Szpitalna streets.
