There was a time in the Middle Ages when local rulers invited various monastic orders to settle in their realms. They gave the monks and nuns lands in fiefdom, and even funded monasteries to facilitate the settlement. In 1248, Duke Barnim I of Stettin funded the Cistercian nunnery at the St Mary stream. Over time, the town of Marianowo grew around the nunnery. The nuns took care to have trees all around their property.
