Joanna Kulmowa was a poet, writer and director. Her husband Jan Kulma was also a writer, theatre director and philosopher, who fought in the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. They settled in Strumiany in 1961 and lived there until 1996, actively participating in the life of the local community. The citizens of Sowno held them in such high esteem that they named one of the streets after them.
