Stone penitential crosses used to be placed on the site of crime starting from the Middle Ages. The penitential cross in Kotla is unusually built in the church wall. It was placed by a son who built the church tower with his father. During the work they had an argument. The angry son, who was on the tower, threw an axe at his father and hit him into his straight into his head, killing him on the spot. The murder weapon can be seen on the sandstone cross which may come from the 15th century.
