In early 12th century. when Pomerania was ruled by Duke Warcisław I and Poland by Duke Bolesław III the Wrymouth, Bishop Otto of Bamberg set out on a christianisation mission to Western Pomerania. The first town he arrived in was Pyrzyce. There, at a small spring, Bishop Otto baptised the town people. The baptism of Pyrzyce took place in 1124. In 1824, a famous German architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel designed St Otto’s well to commemorate the 700th anniversary of that day. One year later, a famous German garden architect, Peter Joseph Lenné, designed a small park around the well. Some of the trees which were planted then are still growing there.
