On 12 August 1759, on the hills of Kunersdorf, nearly 50 thousand Prussian troops faced the 59 thousand strong forces of the Russian-Austrian coalition. Despite the initial success, the Prussian army, commanded by King Frederick II the Great, was eventually crushed, with only 3 thousand troops making their way back to Berlin. The battle ended with around 11 thousand killed and 23 wounded troops, with the majority of casualties on the Prussian side. The coalition, however, soon proved to be weak, as the two member states pursued different interests, thus allowing the Prussians to regain their footing.
